workbackwards: (» the tears come on their own)
[personal profile] workbackwards
[There's nothing interesting going on here in this rather plain bedroom. Not too many posters, but there are labels on everything that describe actions like turn off the light, make the bed, turn off alarm. In addition to those labels, there's a young man whose alarm clock is blaring at the top of its mechanical lungs until he rolls over and slaps it into silence. He slowly drags himself out of bed, shirtless with a long scar running down from the nape of his neck across his shoulder and down his arm, and shuffles to the closest window, pushing the curtain aside to place his hand against the glass. He stands there for a moment as a confused frown forms on his face, only to shove the drapes back and come face to face with... space. The final frontier.

It's not what Chris Pratt expected. It's supposed to be Kansas City out there.

He hurries back to bed, knocking off knickknacks off his nighttable until he comes across a small notebook with a red cover. Chris flips through it once, twice, three, and then a fourth time, looking for something that isn't there. And in a fit of something that's a mixture of panic, fear, and frustration, he throws the notepad across the room and begins stomping towards the door.]

Where the fuck am I? Lewis? Lewis!

It's not much like any jail I've ever seen - the only commonality is being here against your will.

And you will have a case manager, of sorts. You'll be assigned a warden at some point. It'll be their job to help you graduate.

I'm sorry.

It's not really jail. It's more like... rehab.

[She frowns a little. This guy has clearly been through a lot of crap.]

No, it's not that kind of rehab. It's more like the mental and emotional kind.

It's a little bit different here. Basically, the Admiral brings people here who have made terrible mistakes, and the rehab is sort of to help them see what they did wrong and how they can fix it. That's how you graduate.

You might be dead. But the Barge gives you a second chance. If you graduate, you'll go back to where you came from, and you won't be dead.

Though I think some people choose to go... other places, when they leave. Other universes. And some people who graduate stay here, and become wardens. It'll be your choice, when you get to that point.

You mean, tell the difference if you're dead or not? I don't think anyone knows. I think some people know they're dead because they... just remember it, you know? Some people don't know for sure.

But - don't worry about it. You're not supposed to have all the answers. Not that anyone ever does, anyway, but that's kind of the point of being here. To figure some of this stuff out.

You wouldn't have been brought here if you were beyond all hope.

That said, sometimes people disappear from the Barge with no explanation, without graduating. I have no idea what happens to them. Sometimes they come back, eventually.

[She already told him that. Well, that explains the notes around his room. Poor guy. He has all her sympathy.]

Ariadne. And you're Chris, right? [That's what Arthur called him.]

This place is pretty confusing, but there are lots of people around willing to help.

A-R-I-A-D-N-E.

I run the art room, if that's something you're interested in.

It's possible, once you're assigned to a warden, that they'll get a job for you.

I doubt it'll be janitor - that's reserved mostly as punishment.

But until you get a warden, you're welcome to hang out at the art room.

[She blinks. Twice. Because... wow. Not in a bad way, just... in a surprising way.]

Sure. All levels of ability are welcome. Heck, I'm not the greatest drawer ever, myself.

You don't have one, yet. At some point, you'll be assigned one. Sometimes it happens really fast, sometimes it takes a while.
